MIT emeritus professor Dick Schmalensee joins Berkeley Research Group

MIT Emeritus Professor of Economics Richard “Dick” Schmalensee has been appointed as a senior advisor at the antitrust and competition policy of consulting firm Berkeley Research Group.

Schmalensee is widely known as an expert in industrial organization economics and is known for his work on multisided platforms. He has authored or coauthored over 120 articles and 11 books, including Matchmakers: The New Economics of Multisided Platforms, coauthored with David Evans.

Alongside his academic career, Schmalensee has served in various public sector roles. He was a member of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers during President George H. W. Bush’s administration and has consulted for the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and the U.S. Department of Justice.

“Professor Schmalensee is one of the foremost academics in the application of economics to competition policy issues. The expertise he’ll bring to our team will be critical as we continue to build our capabilities in antitrust and competition policy,” said David Teece, BRG’s Executive Chairman.

Schmalensee is a fellow of The Econometric Society and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a member of the executive committee of the National Bureau of Economic Research. He is also Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Directors of Resources for the Future.
