White House appoints Matthew Kraft to Council of Economic Advisers

The Biden administration has named education economist Matthew Kraft as a senior economist on the White House Council of Economic Advisers.

He took up the one-year appointment on July 22, and will be working on issues relating to education and children, as well as other domestic and international economic policy topics.

Kraft is an education, public policy and economics researcher, whose work has focused primarily on improving K-12 public schools. He is an associate professor at Brown University, and will be on leave from the institution while working in the White House.

“This role offers a really amazing opportunity to advance my own understanding and experience with policy making at the highest levels,” he said. “I think it’s critical for researchers to have a better understanding of this so we can design and conduct research that is more likely to be relevant and impactful for shaping and improving society.”

The Council of Economic Advisers is charged with providing real-time, objective evidence and analysis to inform executive branch economic policy decision-making.
