Frank Smets to lead economic analysis at Bank for International Settlements
The Bank for International Settlements has appointed Frank Smets as deputy head of the institution’s monetary and economic department and head of economic analysis and statistics.
He starts his five-year term in the role on Dec. 1, and will join from the European Central Bank, where he is currently an adviser to the executive board.
Smets is an expert on monetary economics and monetary policy, and obtained his Ph.D. in economics from Yale University. His research has focused on monetary, macroeconomic, financial and institutional issues relating to central banking.
He previously held roles including director general of economics and adviser to the president at the ECB. Smets began his career at the Bank for International Settlements.
Smets will be one of two deputy heads of BIS’s monetary and economic department, along with Gaston Gelos.
